The Role of Antennas:

Antennas serve as the critical link between the radio and the surrounding environment. They facilitate the transmission and reception of radio signals, allowing operators to communicate effectively. There are many different types of Antennas and each band needs an antenna for that band by either design or tuning.

This Antenna workshop focuses on the 2m/440 bands (the standard bands a handheld radio uses). There are different workshops for different antenna designs. Currently we are offering a foldable J-pole antenna made from a tape measure. This antenna can greatly increase the range of your handheld radio.

As part of the class, we discuss antenna theory (basic overview), types of feedlines, types of antenna wires and shows several examples of different types of antennas. In the class you will also use basic electronic equipment including soldering. This class is suitable for ages 10 and up (exceptions can be made with prior approval).

VHF/UHF Antennas

UHF/VHF Antennas:
